MCP can help an AI agent find customer evidence or operate research, but those are different capabilities. Maren, Outset, Listen Labs, Strella, Conveo, Voicepanel, Maze, and Dovetail all advertise a connection. Choose by the work exposed through it.
For example, “Summarise last month’s onboarding studies” requires retrieval. “Prepare interviews with these trial users, return their links, and synthesise the responses when ready” requires study operations as well. A product can support one, both, or a subset of either.
Disclosure and method: we build Maren. This comparison reviews the linked public vendor documentation as of 13 September 2026. It does not claim that each connection was tested in every AI client. Where a source describes a feature without documenting its exact tools, the table says what remains to verify.
What the public documentation establishes
| Platform | Documented MCP scope or vendor claim | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Maren | Ten tools covering study preparation, participants, activation, links, status, and synthesis | Synthesis only; no raw transcripts or invitation sending |
| Outset | Advertises launching studies, analysing results, and interacting with Digital Twins | Available tools, permissions, plan access, and distinction between human interviews and simulated responses |
| Listen Labs | Research-library access to themes, quotes, and cross-study synthesis | Ask the account team for access and the current write-tool scope |
| Strella | Lists study creation, past-research queries, reporting, and analysis | Exact study operations and client availability for the account |
| Conveo | Advertises MCP and API access alongside its knowledge layer | Request the tool catalogue and plan requirements |
| Voicepanel | Read and write tools spanning research operations | Onboarding availability and the account role’s permitted actions |
| Maze | Search and explore studies, responses, transcripts, and findings | Verify creation and launch separately; the overview focuses on existing research |
| Dovetail | Read and write operations on research objects and customer evidence | Which objects the workflow needs and which connection method the client supports |
This table reports documented scope. It does not label a capability absent merely because it was not described on the reviewed page.
Maren: take a product question into customer interviews
Maren’s connection is useful when an agent-assisted discussion identifies missing evidence. It can turn the current context into a draft study, with an objective, interview style, and discussion guide for you to review.
The documented sequence is:
- Inspect the workspace, remaining capacity, interview styles, and existing projects.
- Create a draft and add the participants you specify.
- Activate the project and retrieve each participant’s personal interview link.
- Check fieldwork status as people complete interviews.
- Start synthesis after at least three eligible interviews finish, then retrieve the report.
You select one workspace and approve permissions when connecting. Adding participants sends no email. The current tools return synthesis rather than raw transcripts. A link grants access to its participant’s interview, so distribute each link only to the intended person.
That fits a founder who wants to investigate a question with existing customers and bring findings back into the planning conversation. Maren’s 30-day Pro trial includes 40 interviews and 10 syntheses with no credit card; paid plans begin at €79 per month. See the connection guide for your client.
Write access needs a more precise comparison
A write operation can mean creating a folder, generating a report, launching fieldwork, or buying recruitment. Those actions have different consequences. Ask to see the exact operation that moves your study forward.
Dovetail is a useful example of why broad labels fail: it expanded beyond read-only access in May 2026. That does not make its research-object workflow identical to Maren’s participant interview workflow. Outset, Strella, and Voicepanel also describe agent actions; they should not be represented as simple export connectors.
For each candidate, separate creating a draft from publishing it, adding a contact from contacting them, and generating analysis from collecting new human responses. If a product also offers simulated participants or digital twins, keep those outputs distinct from actual interview evidence when evaluating it.
Retrieval quality matters as much as tool count
Try a question that requires evidence from more than one study. Check whether the answer retains the study name, participant context, original date, and supporting source. Ask the agent to show contradictions and uncertainty rather than only a clean summary.
A large tool catalogue is not a substitute for useful evidence. Conversely, a focused retrieval connection may be exactly what a team needs if its research is already complete. Start with the decision and work backwards to the minimum data and actions required.
A practical evaluation checklist
| Evaluate | Ask the vendor or test in a pilot |
|---|---|
| Access | Can this account connect today? Which plan and client features are required? |
| Actions | Can it complete the intended step, or only draft instructions for a person? |
| Evidence | Does it return synthesis, quotes, raw transcripts, recordings, or references? |
| Permissions | Which workspace and data can it access? How do you revoke the connection? |
| Fieldwork | Which operation publishes a study, contacts someone, or incurs spend? |
| Data handling | What content moves to the AI client and under which processing terms? |
Maren’s security page documents its own processing and storage regions. An external AI client has its own data handling: Maren’s EU processing does not establish where that client processes retrieved synthesis. Share only the content required for the task and use a client your team has approved for it.
FAQ
What is a customer research MCP server?
It connects an AI client to a research product through the Model Context Protocol. Depending on the server and permissions, the agent can retrieve evidence, create research objects, or operate parts of a study.
Is Maren the only research platform with MCP?
No. Outset, Listen Labs, Strella, Conveo, Voicepanel, Maze, and Dovetail also advertise MCP. Compare their documented actions and access requirements rather than treating MCP support as a unique feature.
Can Maren MCP send participant invitations or retrieve raw transcripts?
No. Adding participants sends no email, and the current MCP returns synthesis rather than raw transcripts. It can return personal interview links for you to distribute and start synthesis once at least three eligible interviews are complete.
Does an MCP connection make interview evidence safe to share with any AI tool?
No. When an AI client retrieves research, that content also enters the client’s processing environment. Review the client’s data handling, your approved workspace permissions, and what evidence needs to be shared.
