Choose Maren for focused interviews with your existing customers. Choose Maze when you need to test how people use a prototype, website, or mobile experience, or want several research methods in one platform. Both use AI, and both support MCP connections.
The distinction becomes clear with two product questions. “Why did these customers stop using the feature?” calls for accounts of recent experience. “Can people find and complete this task in the new design?” calls for observing the task. One study can inform the other, but they produce different evidence.
Disclosure: we build Maren. This comparison uses public product and help documentation checked on 13 September 2026. It is not a benchmark of research quality or participant completion rates.

Where Maze fits better
Maze supports methods such as prototype testing, live website testing, mobile testing, surveys, and moderated interviews. Its AI moderator can generate a discussion guide and ask contextual follow-ups. Evaluate the method and plan together; the availability of one AI feature does not mean every workflow is included in the same package.
For a navigation redesign, seeing where participants click and where they fail is more useful than asking them to remember the experience. Use that evidence to identify the failure, then interview people if you still need to understand the decision behind it.
If your target participants are outside your customer base, Maze also offers paid panel recruitment. Its panel credit documentation distinguishes study types and audiences. Budget recruitment separately from platform access and check whether the screener can reach the people your decision concerns.
Where Maren fits better
Maren is useful when the people and research question are already clear: recent cancellations, trial users who stalled, or buyers who chose another vendor. You prepare an objective and interview style, then send a link. Participants answer without an account or appointment.
The AI interviewer asks follow-ups during the conversation. Individual summaries and synthesis help the team compare what people said. Optional dictation makes answering easier for participants who prefer speaking, but the research record stays text; it does not preserve voice or screen evidence.
Maren’s public plans let a small team price that habit before a sales call: €79 per month for 40 interviews and 10 syntheses, or €299 for 200 interviews and 50 syntheses. A new workspace includes a 30-day Pro trial without a credit card.
MCP: new fieldwork and existing evidence
Maze’s documented MCP use cases include finding studies, reviewing transcripts and responses, gathering quotes, and looking for patterns across research. Those are useful when a designer or product manager needs to reuse findings during everyday work. The overview reviewed here does not establish a study-creation and launch contract; ask Maze to demonstrate those actions if they are required.
Maren MCP documents operations for creating a draft, adding participants, activating the project, and retrieving personal links. An agent can then monitor completion and start synthesis once at least three eligible interviews are complete. It can retrieve the report into the same conversation.
Consider a planning discussion that exposes an unanswered question about activation. With Maren, the agent can help turn it into new fieldwork. With an existing Maze library, first use its MCP to see whether your team already has relevant evidence. In either case, examine the supporting source before turning a summary into a product decision.
Maren’s current MCP sends no invitations and does not expose raw transcripts. Connection approval selects a workspace and permissions. See the full MCP comparison for differences across the category.
How to decide
Choose by the evidence you need next. A text account of a customer’s buying decision is useful evidence for churn or positioning. A recording of task failure is useful evidence for usability. Avoid forcing either tool into a method it cannot perform.
If both jobs recur, the tools may complement each other. Keep the research question and participant context attached to any findings you move between them; a quote from a churn study does not automatically explain a prototype test result.
FAQ
Is Maren an alternative to Maze?
For AI-moderated text interviews with your own customers, yes. Maren does not replace Maze’s prototype testing, live website testing, mobile testing, or wider research methods.
Does Maze have MCP?
Yes. Maze documents MCP access to studies, responses, transcripts, and research analysis. Its overview focuses on retrieving and exploring research; verify study creation or launch requirements separately if those actions are essential.
What does Maren MCP do?
Maren MCP lets an approved agent prepare a study, add participants without emailing them, activate the project, retrieve personal interview links, check progress, and start and retrieve synthesis. It returns synthesis rather than raw transcripts.
