Maren vs Listen Labs: research platform or AI researcher?

Kalle

Maren and Listen Labs both use AI to plan, conduct, and analyse research interviews. But if both are on your shortlist, the real decision is not “which AI is better?” It is whether you need a research platform around the interview—or a fast way to keep talking to your own users.

Listen Labs is an end-to-end research platform for teams that want participant recruitment, video interviews, analysis, and stakeholder-ready outputs in one workflow. Maren is the direct route for founders: send your users a link, let Maren run the text conversations, and read what she learned without standing up a research operation.

The short answer: choose Listen Labs when recruitment, video, screen recording, large-scale analysis, or polished decks are part of the job. Choose Maren when the people who matter are already your users and you want honest conversations live this week—at a price you can see before talking to sales.

Disclosure: we build Maren. Competitor capabilities below come from Listen Labs’ public site and documentation, checked on 19 July 2026.

Where Listen Labs is stronger

Participant recruitment is built into the workflow

Listen Labs says it can recruit and qualify participants from a global network of more than 30 million people. Teams can also distribute a direct link to their own participants or combine both methods.

That makes Listen Labs the clearer choice when the research starts with an audience specification rather than a customer list. If you need a particular job title, demographic, market, or incidence rate, screening and panel operations matter as much as the moderator.

Maren does not offer a participant panel. You invite the people you want to interview.

Video and screen recording capture evidence Maren cannot

Listen conducts video interviews with dynamic follow-ups. Its documentation also describes desktop screen sharing, iOS screen recording, media stimuli, and clips that combine interview and screen evidence.

Use those capabilities when the study depends on seeing a participant use a website, navigate an app, react to a concept, or explain a workflow on screen. Maren’s text transcripts cannot capture facial expression, vocal tone, or observed interaction.

Reporting is built for research to travel through an organisation

Listen’s Research Agent can create executive summaries, charts, reports, slide decks, and highlight reels. Its research library provides a cross-study knowledge base. Those outputs are useful when findings need to be reused, segmented, and presented across a large company.

Maren gives founders the output they are most likely to use: readable interview summaries and cross-interview themes tied to participant evidence. No video production layer, no research repository to administer, and no deck required before the team can act.

Where Maren is stronger

Run a real study before a salesperson enters the chat

Maren publishes two monthly plans and includes a 30-day Pro trial:

  • Pro: 40 interviews for €79;
  • Research: 200 interviews for €299.

If you do not subscribe when the trial ends, the workspace becomes read-only and your research stays available to view or export.

Listen Labs offers “Try for Free” and “Book a Demo” on its public site, but does not publish plan amounts. Maren tells you exactly what the habit costs before you start and gives the first workspace the full Pro plan for 30 days without a credit card.

That changes the buying decision. You do not have to imagine whether AI interviews will be useful for your team. Send the links, read the transcripts, and decide from your own users’ answers.

Interview the people no panel can contain

Many product questions cannot be answered by a general panel. Why did this account churn? Why did that trial stall? What workaround does this customer use every Friday? The relevant participants are already in your CRM, product, or team.

Maren is built around that situation. Create a project, send a share link or invitation, and let participants answer by text on their own schedule. There is no participant app, account, or calendar negotiation.

Listen Labs also supports direct links for your own participants. Maren’s edge is focus: the whole product is shaped around turning a founder’s question into conversations with the exact people behind the funnel, support queue, renewals, and churn.

Busy B2B users can answer without booking a call

A Maren interview requires a browser and typing. It does not require a quiet room, microphone, camera, or scheduled call. A churned customer can answer on the train. A busy buyer can come back between meetings. An employee can take a moment before writing the difficult sentence.

Video carries richer nonverbal signal. Text removes the social and logistical friction of being on camera. For continuous B2B research, the format people can answer on their own terms is often the format that keeps the research habit alive.

EU processing is the default, not a special contract

Maren’s security page states that AI processing happens in AWS Ireland and primary data is stored with Neon in Frankfurt. Application hosting is in Dublin, with edge delivery where applicable. The page also lists subprocessors and transfer safeguards.

Maren makes the architecture visible before procurement asks. If EU processing and primary storage matter to your customers, you can evaluate the published setup immediately. Ask Listen directly which storage, inference, retention, and subprocessor terms apply to its account.

Which should you choose?

Choose Listen Labs if you need one or more of the following:

  • recruitment from a large built-in network;
  • video interviews or screen recording;
  • quantitative questions and segment analysis alongside qualitative interviews;
  • highlight reels, charts, decks, or a cross-study research repository;
  • an end-to-end platform for an established research or insights team.

Choose Maren if these statements describe the job:

  • the participants are your own users, customers, or employees;
  • async text is appropriate for the audience and question;
  • you want to start without a sales conversation;
  • visible monthly pricing and a no-card trial matter;
  • EU-based AI processing and primary data storage are procurement requirements.

There is also a strong two-tool answer: keep Maren running as the always-on channel to your own users, then bring in Listen Labs when a market question needs recruited participants, video, and a polished research package. One builds the weekly habit; the other handles the bigger research programme.

FAQ

Is Maren a Listen Labs alternative?

Yes—when the job is interviewing your own users and synthesising what they said. For that use case, Maren is faster to adopt, transparent to buy, and purpose-built for the founder workflow. It is not a replacement for Listen Labs’ recruitment network, video and screen recording, advanced reporting, or cross-study knowledge base.

How much does Listen Labs cost?

Listen Labs does not publish numeric plan prices on the public pages reviewed on 19 July 2026. Its site offers both a free-trial route and a demo. Ask for a quote based on participant source, sample size, interview length, and reporting needs.

How much does Maren cost?

Maren offers a 30-day Pro trial with no credit card required. Pro includes 40 interviews for €79 per month, and Research includes 200 interviews for €299 per month. Paid plans also allow per-interview overages. Without a subscription, the workspace becomes read-only after the trial and research stays available to view or export.

Does Maren recruit participants?

No. Researchers invite their own users, customers, or employees through share links or personal invitations.

Does Listen Labs support participants you recruit yourself?

Yes. Its documentation says teams can use Listen’s built-in network, a direct link for their own participants, or both.

Which platform is better for usability testing?

Listen Labs is the stronger choice when usability research requires screen recording or video observation. Maren can interview people about a recent workflow or experience, but it cannot observe them using the product.
